Corner Strike is a five man protection pass concept out of Shotgun Split Slot Open with 2 backs on the field. The backside receiver runs a deep corner route as the primary vertical shot, while the frontside stacks a flat route underneath a deep out breaking receiver and a slot receiver working an in cut across the middle. The read progresses from the corner route first, then works to the deep out, before checking down to the flat if the shot play is covered, making this a man beater designed to exploit off coverage or a single high safety.

Defensive Reads

Watch the backside cornerback pre-snap, if he is playing off with no safety help deep on that side the corner route wins immediately Identify single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 since the corner route can split the safety and cornerback for a big play Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, these shut down the corner route and force you to work underneath Key the flat defender post snap, if a linebacker sinks too deep into the middle it opens the flat route for an easy completion Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the middle of the field, this can jump the in cut route and create a turnover opportunity

Usage Tips

Call this play on early downs when you have a favorable one on one matchup on the backside corner route against a corner without safety help over the top

Check the pre-snap alignment for single high safety looks since Cover 1 and Cover 3 leave the corner route vulnerable to a deep shot

If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap, be ready to work the deep out or flat route instead of forcing the corner throw into double coverage

Hot route the flat route into a quick out if you see a corner blitz coming off that edge to give your quarterback an immediate answer

Pair this with Mtn Flood or PA Flood from the same set to keep the defense guessing between the vertical shot and horizontal flood concepts
