Corner Strike is a Shotgun Split Slot Open pass play built around a single outside corner route to attack the deep sideline. The X receiver at the top drives vertically and breaks hard to the corner, while the underneath crossers and outs from the other three receivers occupy the shallow to intermediate zones and stretch the defense horizontally. This is a man beater at its core, using the corner route to separate from trail technique, but the underneath outs also give you a zone beater answer against soft coverage shells. The primary read starts with the corner route on top, then works down to the shallow crosser and outside outs if the corner is taken away.
Watch the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety cheating toward the corner route side signals help over the top and should discourage the deep throw. Post-snap, key the flat defender and outside cornerback leverage, if the corner sits on the route with inside shade the throw window shrinks fast. Cover 2 shells with a hard-sitting corner underneath and safety rotating over the top shut this down, look to the shallow crosser instead. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge on the corner route side create urgency, get the ball out on the corner route quickly or check down to the crossers. Zone defenses with linebackers sinking into passing lanes will clog the shallow crosser, so trust the corner route separation against man coverage looks.
Pre-snap, identify if the cornerback over the corner route is playing off man or has safety help over the top before committing to the deep shot.
Against single high shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1, the corner route can win one on one if you throw with anticipation before the break.
Use the shallow crosser and outside outs as checkdown or hot route options if the safety rotates over to double the corner.
This play pairs well with Dbl Slant or RPO Peek Slant out of the same set since the quick game look sets up defenders to bite underneath, opening the corner route on a later snap.
Best called on second or third and medium when you have time to let the corner route develop and a deep shot is in play.
