PA Flood from Shotgun Split Slot Open uses a play-action fake to hold the linebackers before flooding one side of the field with three vertical levels. The backside runs a deep corner route while the frontside stacks a deep vertical, an intermediate out that breaks flat toward the sideline, and a shallow crosser underneath, creating a true flood concept to one side. This is a classic Cover 3 beater because it overloads the flat and deep third defenders with three receivers stretching one half of the field, forcing the deep third corner and flat defender to choose between the underneath out and the vertical threat. The primary read progression goes flat route first (the red route breaking hard to the sideline), then climbs to the intermediate crosser, and finally to the deep shot if the corner bites on the flat.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety pre-snap since that usually signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which the flood concept is designed to punish underneath. Watch the flat defender post-snap. If he sinks with the deep out route, throw the shallow crosser underneath for an easy pickup. Key the deep third corner to the flood side. If he stays deep and outside to protect against the corner route, the flat and crosser combo will be wide open. Beware two high safety shells (Cover 2 or Cover 4) since the deep corner route runs into extra help and the flood is easier to squeeze with two defenders splitting three routes. User lurk defenders sitting in the shallow crosser lane can jump the underneath route, so be ready to reset to the flat throw or climb the pocket if the play-action fake buys extra time.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or second and medium when you want to attack a Cover 3 shell without committing to a low percentage deep shot.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap. A single high safety with the corners playing off usually confirms Cover 3 and green lights the flood read.

Use the flat route as your rhythm throw against zone defenses that are dropping their corner deep, then progress to the crosser if the flat defender sits.

Hot route the backside corner route into a hitch or slant if you diagnose man coverage pre-snap since the flood concept loses value against tight man unless you have a clear speed advantage on the outside.

Pair this play with Mtn Flood or Flood from the same set to disguise formation tendencies, then mix in Shakes or Y Cross on early downs so the defense cannot sit on the flood concept.
