46 Y Cross out of Shotgun Split Slot Open is a man beater built around the classic Y crosser working all the way from one side of the formation to the other. At the snap the two outside receivers to the left run vertical clearing routes stacked at different depths to occupy the corner and safety, while the tight end runs the shallow drag underneath through the middle of the formation right in front of the linebackers. On the right side the slot receiver runs a corner route and the running back releases into a flat/arrow route out of the backfield, giving the quarterback a horizontal stretch on that side if the crosser gets picked up. The primary read starts with the Y crosser working left to right across the field, then works to the flat route from the running back if the crosser is taken away, with the corner route as a deep alert against zone.

Defensive Reads

Against man coverage, key the defender covering the tight end, if he is not fast enough to stay on top of the crosser this play is nearly unstoppable. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in a shallow zone or lurk spot in the middle of the field, this is the primary threat to the Y crosser and forces the quarterback to check down to the flat. Against zone coverage, identify if the underneath defenders are dropping deep enough to take away the crossing route while leaving the flat open to the running back. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can jump both the running back's route and the shallow crosser if the linebackers sink quickly, so be ready to reset to the corner route on the slot receiver. If the defense shows two high safeties and presses the outside receivers, expect the crosser to have room underneath but the corner route may be taken away by the deep half safety.

Usage Tips

Use this against man coverage looks where the tight end has a linebacker or slower defender matched up on him since the crosser will create instant separation working across the field.

Pre-snap, check for a single high safety or two deep shell, if it is man match or press man across the board this play wins fast with the Y crosser.

If the user jumps the crosser with a lurking linebacker or safety, immediately look to the running back's flat route for a quick checkdown before the rush arrives.

Pair this play with Mtn Y Cross or PA Y Cross in the same set to keep the defense guessing on the same crosser concept from different launch points.

This play works best on second and medium to third and short distances where the drag route can pick up positive yardage even if the defense is playing off coverage.

Motion or shift the running back pre-snap to identify man versus zone based on whether a defender follows him across the formation.
