Breakdown

DBL Ins is a five man protection concept out of Shotgun Split Slot Open that sends the outside receivers vertical to clear the deep half while the two inside receivers break hard on in routes at different depths, creating a natural high low read against zone or a rub against man. The backside slot works a short crossing route underneath as a checkdown against blitz looks, and the running back stays in to help protect. This is a man and zone beater built on the double in combo, with the primary read progression starting at the deep in route from the slot, working down to the shallow in route breaking from the opposite side, and finishing with the underneath crosser if both ins are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment since two high shells with soft corners invite the deeper in route into the seam. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: shallow dropping linebackers will collapse the underneath crosser, forcing the QB to climb the progression to the deeper in route. User controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk will jump the shallow in route, so bait that defender with your eyes before working to the deeper in route on the opposite hash. Cover 3 with a hard flowing curl to flat defender is the toughest shell against this concept since it can wall off both in routes and force a checkdown to the crosser. Man coverage with inside leverage on the slot receivers is vulnerable because the ins break away from that leverage, but a disguised blitz that gets immediate pressure can beat the play before routes develop.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and medium or third and short when you expect zone coverage since the double ins sit right in the honey hole between linebackers and safeties.

Check the middle of the field before the snap: if you see a single high safety rotate late, the deeper in route will have a natural window over the linebackers.

Against man coverage, hot route the backside outside receiver to a slant or drag if you are getting no push on the vertical to speed up the shallow crosser as your outlet.

Pair this call with 46 Y Cross or Y Cross earlier in a series so the defense starts keying on crossing traffic, then hit them with DBL Ins to attack any middle linebacker who bites on the initial route flash.

Watch your protection count before the snap and slide protection toward the RB side if you see a four man rush with a possible nano blitz look, since the QB needs a full progression to work through both in routes.
