Defensive Reads
Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who step up on the play-action fake open throwing lanes for the crossing route. Identify single high safety shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 since the vertical routes on the outside can stress the deep third defenders if they bite on run action. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4, the F slide in the flat becomes the primary answer since the crosser will run into traffic underneath. Key on user-controlled linebackers or lurk defenders sitting in the middle hook zone, they can rob the crossing route if the quarterback stares it down. Fast disciplined edge defenders who do not bite on play-action can disrupt the fullback release into the flat, so watch for contain rushers staying home.

Use this on early downs like 1st or 2nd and medium to keep defenses honest against your run game out of Split Slot Open. Check the safety alignment pre-snap, a single high safety often means the crosser will have room to work behind linebackers who bite on the play-action fake. If the defense shows two deep shells, prioritize the F slide route in the flat since the vertical routes will be capped. Pair this play with HB Off Tackle and HB Power O from the same set so the run fake actually threatens defenders and freezes the second level. Hot route the crosser to sit versus zone if you see linebackers dropping into passing lanes, and lean on the F slide as your answer versus overload blitzes since it releases quickly.
