Breakdown

PA F Slide is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Split Slot Open that dresses up like a run fake before flooding the backside of the formation. Off the play-action mesh point, the fullback slides across the formation into the shallow flat while two receivers on the far side stack deep and intermediate crossers running left, and the inline tight end and slot receiver on the right release vertically up the seam. The primary read starts with the deep crosser breaking hard left off the play-action fake, then works down to the F back sliding into the shallow flat as the checkdown, giving you a high-low read that stresses zone defenders who bite on the run fake.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check linebacker depth: if they are sitting shallow expecting run, the play-action window on the deep crosser is wide open. Watch for a single high safety, this usually means Cover 3 or Cover 1 and the crossing routes will have soft spots between the underneath zone and deep safety. Post-snap, key the flow of the linebackers off the run fake, if they bite hard downhill the shallow F slide route will be uncovered in the vacated area. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined linebackers who stay home, this squeezes the passing lanes on the crossers and forces you to check down early. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the fullback or sitting in a shallow lurk technique, this is the biggest threat to shut down the checkdown option on this concept.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake by holding the ball at the mesh point as long as possible before your first read, this freezes linebackers and opens the crossing lane.

Use this on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when the defense is geared up to stop the run, since the play-action fake carries more weight against run-heavy fronts.

If you see two-high safeties pre-snap, prioritize the deep crossing route since one safety likely has to respect the play fake and vacate the middle.

Hot route the F back's slide route into a flat or angle route against man coverage if you see a linebacker walked up over him, this creates an easy conversion vs blitz-happy defenses.

Pair this with Mtn Flood or PA Flood from the same set to keep defenses honest, since both plays start with similar run action but attack different levels of the field.
