Breakdown

HB Power O out of Shotgun Split Slot Open is a gap scheme run play built to get downhill blocking angles with a pulling lineman leading the way for the HB. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down while a guard pulls across the formation to kick out the edge defender, and the HB takes a hard aiming point off tackle before pressing upfield through the alley created by the pull. This is a pure run play with no route concept attached, designed to overpower zone fronts and exploit gaps created by down blocks rather than beat coverage with route combinations. The primary read progression is patience at the mesh point: read the pulling guard's block, identify whether the play should stay tight off his hip or bounce outside if the edge gets sealed too far upfield.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the play side defensive end squeezing hard inside, which signals the defense is reading the pulling guard and setting up to spill the run. Key the mike linebacker's first step, if he flows fast toward the play side gap the lane will close quickly and the HB needs to cut it back immediately. Identify base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts pre-snap since heavier boxes with two off ball linebackers tend to fill gaps faster and can shut this play down before it develops. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the backfield, since a smart user will jump the pulling guard's path and blow up the kickout block. This run struggles against stacked eight man fronts and aggressive gap-shooting blitzes that get penetration before the guard can seal his target.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap to check the box count and identify if the defense has stacked the line with an extra defender, since Power O needs a numbers advantage to hit cleanly.

Look for the mike linebacker's alignment before the snap, if he is stacked over the play side guard the pull lane will be tighter and you should be ready to bounce outside.

Pair this play with HB Off Tackle and Inside Zone Split in your call sheet to keep the defense guessing between gap and zone run schemes from the same formation.

Run this on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium, when defenses are more likely to play base personnel instead of stacking the box with extra DBs.

If the defense shows heavy blitz pre-snap, consider checking to Shovel Option or RPO Peek Slant from the same set to punish aggressive linebacker fills.
