Slants HB Flat out of Shotgun Split Slot Open sends the outside receivers on quick slant routes while the HB releases to the flat, creating a horizontal stretch that punishes both man and zone coverage. This is a quick game man beater and zone beater in one, designed to get the ball out fast against blitz looks or soft coverage before pressure arrives. The primary read progression starts with the backside slant, works to the frontside slant if the leverage is better, and dumps to the HB flat as the built in checkdown against zone drops or blitz pressure.

Defensive Reads

Watch cornerback depth pre-snap since press man alignment signals the slant should win quickly on the release, while soft corners playing off invite a shorter throw window. Identify Cover 3 shells by checking single high safety alignment, this coverage is vulnerable to the slant sitting in the seam vacated by the flat defender's zone drop. Key on the flat defender in Cover 2 or Tampa 2 looks, if he sinks too deep or widens too far, the slant window opens up immediately behind him. Post-snap, track any user controlled linebacker dropping into the shallow zone or spying the HB flat release, since a rat linebacker or lurk defender can jump both the slant and the flat throw. Cover 4 or match quarters coverage with disciplined linebackers sitting on short routes can shut this down, so be ready to check to a different concept if you see two deep safeties with linebackers staying square in their zones.

Pre-snap, check for Cover 3 or Cover 1 shells since the slants attack the seam between corners and underneath linebackers, and the HB flat gives you a built in answer against Cover 2 flat defenders sitting outside.

If the defense shows blitz with linebackers creeping up, hot route the HB to stay in as a check release blocker or immediately target the flat since the underneath zone will be vacated.

Pair this play with Dbl Slant or RPO Peek Slant in your call sheet to condition the defense to bite on the quick slant look, then punish overaggressive linebackers later with Mtn HB Slip Screen or HB Slip Screen out of the same personnel.

Use the flat route as your emergency valve against nano blitzes since the HB releases quickly and gives the QB a low risk outlet before the pocket collapses.
