FB Inside is a pure downhill run play out of Shotgun Split Slot Open with 20 personnel, putting the fullback in the backfield alongside the ball carrier for a dive concept between the guards. The offensive line blocks straight ahead with the fullback leading through the hole to seal the first man off the ball, giving the runner a designated dive lane. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes and gap fits rather than a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the fullback's lead block combined with the frontside gap read at the point of attack.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if both inside backers are sitting shallow at five yards or less they are cheating the run and can beat the FB lead block to the point of attack. Identify whether the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 front, since a bigger nose tackle or true nose in a 3-4 can eat the fullback's block and clog the dive lane immediately. Key the safety alignment, if a safety is stacked in the box pre-snap this play dies quickly because it adds an extra run defender the FB cannot account for. Look for A-gap blitzes or a nano blitz package, since a delayed inside linebacker shooting a gap can blow this up before the fullback gets a clean block. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support in the box is where this play thrives, so if you see man match or press man outside with only four in the box, trust the interior run.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this against 6 or fewer defenders in the box since the FB lead block needs numbers advantage to work.

Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against your RPO and play-action calls in this set like RPO Peek Slant and Mtn RPO Alert QB Counter.

If the defense shows a stacked box or a linebacker crashing downhill pre-snap, audible to HB Sweep Wk or RB Sweep to bounce outside instead of forcing it inside.

Pair FB Inside with Shovel Option or Power Read on back to back calls so the defense has to respect both the interior dive and the edge or option read, opening cutback lanes.

User the fullback briefly after the snap to confirm his target, then release control back to the runner so you can manually pick the exact crease based on linebacker flow.
