Breakdown

PA HB Wheel is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Split Slot Open that disguises the run fake before releasing the HB on a wheel route up the sideline off the play fake, shown breaking up the left boundary as the top vertical threat. Underneath, the play packs in crossing traffic with an over route working from right to left and a drag settling into the shallow left flat, while the near receiver runs a short in-cut, creating a natural clear-out for the wheel. This is a man beater at its core, since the HB wheel dusts off linebackers and slot corners that bite on the play-action run fake, but the drag and over combo also gives you answers versus zone drops underneath. Primary read progression starts with the HB wheel down the sideline, then works back to the over route crossing the middle, and finally checks down to the shallow drag if the wheel and over are both covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker or slot defender aligned over the HB before the snap, since if he bites hard on the run fake and turns his hips inside, the wheel route will be wide open down the sideline. Check the safety depth pre-snap, because a single high safety rotating late often signals man coverage underneath, which is exactly what this wheel route is designed to exploit. Post-snap, key the flow of the linebackers, if they all flow hard toward the play-action fake and vacate the deep outside third, that is your green light to hit the wheel immediately off the top of your drop. Against zone coverage, identify any defender sinking into a deep third or quarter on the wheel side early, since a disciplined zone defender staying home on the sideline will take away the wheel and force you to work the over or drag underneath. Be wary of user-controlled defenders spying the HB out of the backfield or a linebacker blitzing through the A-gap, since a delayed HB release into the wheel combined with pressure can collapse the pocket before the route develops.

Usage Tips

Sell the play-action fake with a stick of the left stick toward the line before releasing into your dropback, since a convincing run fake is what freezes linebackers and opens the wheel route. Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage, since defenses are more likely to bite on the run fake in run-friendly situations. Pre-snap, look for man coverage indicators like a slot corner or linebacker walked up over the HB, since that alignment is a strong signal the wheel will win. If the defense shows two deep safeties or a clear zone shell, hot route the over route into a deeper dig or hold your drag as a safety valve instead of forcing the wheel into a defender sitting deep. Pair this play in sequence with Backs Cross or HB Slip Screen from the same set, since both plays sell HB involvement early and set up defenses to overplay the backfield, making the wheel route hit even bigger later in the game.
