Defensive Reads

Identify single high versus two high shells before the snap, since Cover 3 and Cover 1 with an aggressive underneath defender tend to bite on the zone action and leave the slot peek open. Post-snap, track whether the overhang defender flows hard with the zone run action or hesitates to sit on the peek route, since that hesitation is the exact key the RPO logic uses. Beware a user controlled linebacker spying the mesh point, since a smart human defender can sit in the throwing lane and jump the peek route for a big play. Cover 4 and match zone concepts with disciplined linebackers who stay square on the mesh point are the toughest shell for this play, since it removes the leverage advantage on both the run and the throw.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and use this play when you see six or fewer defenders in the box, since that guarantees a numbers advantage on either the run or the peek throw.
Key the play side flat or overhang defender immediately after the snap rather than staring down the running back, since his leverage decides whether you pull or hand off.
Use the hot route to adjust the peek receiver's depth if you are facing off coverage, pushing him vertical slightly to create more YAC room once he catches the ball in space.
Run this on early downs in your sequence right after calling Power Read or HB Off Tackle from the same set, since defenders who key run fits will overreact and open up the peek throw.
Avoid forcing this against a stacked box with a spy or robber defender sitting in the peek throwing lane, since the read becomes muddied and the RPO window closes fast.
