Mesh Post Wheel out of Shotgun Split Slot Open pairs a classic mesh combo on the left with a post and wheel combo on the right. The two outside receivers push vertical up the sidelines, the left slot runs a shallow mesh crosser underneath while the inside receiver next to him breaks in on a dig, and on the right side the tight end or slot runs the wheel route up the sideline off the mesh traffic while the outside receiver clears out on a deep post. This is a man beater built to create natural rubs at the mesh point and to isolate the wheel route against man coverage that gets picked off by the crossing traffic, with the primary read starting on the wheel route working outside, then coming back to the mesh crosser underneath if the wheel is covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat or slot corner at the snap, if he stays low and jumps the mesh crossers the wheel route is wide open behind him. Identify single high safety shells pre-snap since Cover 3 and Cover 1 leave the wheel route vulnerable to a lone deep defender who has to cover both the post and the wheel. Read the middle linebacker depth, if he sits shallow to jump the crossers he cannot help on the post route breaking behind him. Beware Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, this concept struggles because the deep half defenders can rotate over the top of both the post and the wheel. Look for user controlled defenders sitting on the mesh crossers pre-snap, a spy or lurk defender there signals they are baiting you to check into a different concept.

Usage Tips

Check the flat defender and slot corner before the snap because the wheel route only wins if that defender bites on the initial mesh action inside.

Use the mesh crosser as your checkdown against zone coverage since it settles into soft spots when linebackers sink into zone drops.

Against man coverage, trust the pick action at the mesh point and immediately snap your eyes to the wheel route for the explosive play.

Pair this call with Mtn HB Mid Screen or Shakes earlier in a drive so defenders start keying underneath routes, then hit Mesh Post Wheel to expose them for the double move over the top.

Best used on second and medium to second and long where defenses are more likely to sit in man coverage and give you a clean wheel release.
