Use this on early downs (first or second down) when the defense has shown a tendency to respect the run, since the play-action fake needs linebacker respect to open the crossing lane.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap. Two deep safeties with linebackers stacked near the box signals a good spot to run this since the crossers can work underneath the safeties.

If you see man coverage indicators like corners lined up tight with inside or outside leverage, trust the Y Cross to win against man defenders working through the traffic in the middle of the field.

Hot route the backside receiver into a shallow drag or option route if you anticipate a blitz, giving your quarterback a quick outlet before the play-action fake fully develops.
