Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment since stacked or blitzing linebackers can beat the zone blocking scheme before the running back can find a crease. Look at the defensive line technique, because a shaded nose or three technique aligned to the play side call can blow up the double team and force a negative play. Post-snap, key on whether the defensive tackle is a two gapper who sits and reads, since disciplined interior line play is what stops inside zone cold. Watch for user controlled defenders spying the backfield or flowing hard to the play side call, as this leaves the backside cutback wide open if the offensive line executes the zone steps correctly. Stacked fronts and heavy run blitz packages with extra defenders in the box are the biggest threat to this concept, while light boxes with defenders staying in coverage give the runner room to work.
