Breakdown

HB Sweep Wk is a weakside toss run out of Shotgun Split Slot Open, designed to get the HB outside the tackle box before the defense can flow. The diagram shows the line sliding to create a wall while the HB takes the handoff and bends the run wide, reading the edge blocks for a cutback lane versus overpursuit. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO, with the primary read being the outside edge defender: bounce it if he gets sealed, cut it back inside if he crashes hard.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the weakside defensive end and outside linebacker crashing down, if they overpursue the play cuts back inside for a big gain. Stacked fronts or heavy blitz packages with extra defenders in the box can blow this up before the HB turns the corner. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells that keep the corner playing run support outside will squeeze the sweep lane, look for the flow of the safety rotating down. Man coverage with the slot defender staying in coverage rather than crashing the box gives this play more room to develop on the perimeter. If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap with linebackers stacked tight, expect penetration that disrupts the timing of the sweep before it gets outside.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs or short yardage when the defense shows a light box with only six or seven defenders near the line.

Check the alignment of the weakside end and outside linebacker before the snap, if they are crashing inside on run downs this sweep hits the edge fast.

Pair this with Mtn HB Slip Screen or HB Slip Screen in the same set so the defense has to respect both the sweep action and the quick screen out of the same personnel look.

Use manual motion or a user-controlled lead blocker to pick off the first defender that shows outside contain, this is critical against aggressive edge rushers.

Mix in Power Read or HB Off Tackle from the same formation to keep linebackers guessing between inside zone and outside sweep tendencies.
