RPO Peek Waggle is a run-pass option built off play-action waggle boot action from Shotgun Doubles Offset. The diagram shows the QB rolling to the flat side while the yellow route works underneath into the flat and the red route pushes vertical before breaking back across the field, giving the QB a peek window behind the flowing linebackers. This is an RPO with a built-in run key, so the QB reads the box defender flow before the snap and either hands off or pulls to throw off the waggle action, with the primary read progressing from the flat route underneath to the deep crossing peek route.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth and flow pre-snap, if they are stacked tight to the line expecting run, the waggle pass options will be wide open. Man coverage teams that have corners chase the flat route will open up the peek route crossing behind them, so key the trailing defender's hips. Cover 3 and other zone shells with aggressive run support are vulnerable since the flat defender often bites on run action, leaving the underneath flat route uncovered. If the defense shows a scrape exchange or contain defender staying home on the edge, the run option gets shut down and the QB should immediately look to throw. A disciplined MLB who reads the QB's eyes and sits in the peek route's window can jump the throwing lane, so watch for a spy or lurking defender before committing to that read.
Usage Tips
Check the box count pre-snap and if the defense is outnumbered in the run fit, take the handoff immediately for an easy conflict-defender win.
If linebackers crash hard to stop the run, pull the ball on the waggle action and hit the flat route for a quick easy completion.
Use the deep crossing peek route as your answer against teams that key run first and get their safety flowing downhill, since that route sits behind the linebacker level.
Pair this play with Read Option or Inside Zone earlier in a series so the defense has to respect the run action every time it sees this personnel and formation.
Best used on early downs or short yardage third downs where defenses are more likely to sell out against the run look.
