Look for linebacker run blitzes filling the inside zone lanes, since a blown gap read there forces the quarterback to work outside instead of trusting the handoff. User-controlled defenders who abandon their run fit to jump the bubble route open up cutback lanes on the zone run, so respect gap discipline if you are on defense. Man coverage on the backside X receiver is exploitable on the comeback route if the corner presses without deep help, so zone match coverage with a flat defender staying home is the best counter to this concept.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and if there are six or fewer defenders in the box, lean toward keeping the ball on the zone run.
Identify whether the flat defender near the bubble receiver is reading run or hanging outside, since his positioning dictates your pre-snap lean on the RPO.
Use quick hot route adjustments on the X receiver comeback route if you diagnose man coverage, since it can win one-on-one against a corner playing outside leverage.
Save this play for run-heavy downs like first and second and short to medium yardage, where defenses are more likely to sell out against the run.
