RPO Read Bubble is a run pass option out of Shotgun Doubles Offset Wk that pairs an inside zone handoff with a bubble screen read to the offset receiver. Up front the offensive line executes zone blocking to the strong side while the backfield runs an inside zone track, and the outside receiver runs a vertical release upfield to occupy the corner. The primary read is presnap to postsnap on the alley or slot defender: if that defender crashes down on the run fit, pull and throw the bubble, if he sits or widens for the bubble, hand it off on the zone track.

Defensive Reads

Watch the slot or apex defender over the bubble receiver presnap, if he is shaded outside expect the offense to hand it off since the numbers favor the run. Postsnap, key the flow of the second level linebacker, if he steps up hard into the run fit that vacates the bubble throwing lane for an easy pitch and catch. This play struggles against a true zone shell with a linebacker who stays square and shuffles rather than committing, since that defender can play both the run and the bubble. User controlled defenders who sit at the sticks or jump the bubble route with a swat animation can blow this play up before the ball even gets outside. Man coverage with press on the outside vertical release is not the primary concern here, the real answer lies in how disciplined the alley defender is against both threats.

Usage Tips

Presnap, identify whether the slot or alley defender is aligned inside or outside the bubble receiver since that tells you the leverage before the snap even happens.

Use this on early downs like first and ten or second and short so both the run and bubble throw stay in play without forcing a low percentage checkdown.

If the defense shows a hard box with the linebacker cheating toward the bubble receiver, pull and throw immediately instead of hesitating on the zone read.

Against aggressive nano blitz packages, snap it quickly and trust the bubble throw since the zone blocking up front will not hold long enough to save a delayed handoff.
