Breakdown

Mtn QB Blast is a quarterback designed run out of Shotgun Doubles Offset Wk, built to attack downhill through the mountain point of attack (hence the Mtn tag) with the QB as the ballcarrier. The offensive line and blocking H back or TE seal the interior gap while the QB follows the lead blocker through a designated crease, making this a gap scheme QB run rather than a pass concept. There is no true progression read since this is a run play, but the QB's primary job is to key the play side linebacker and lead blocker to decide whether to press the hole or bounce outside if the alley closes.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth pre-snap. Linebackers sitting shallow at four to five yards are primed to fill the mountain gap quickly and can blow this up before the QB gets moving. Man coverage shells with off ball linebackers spying the QB are the biggest counter to this play, since a disciplined spy erases the lane before it develops. Zone coverage with light boxes, especially against nickel or dime personnel trying to defend the pass first, is where this play hits hardest because there are fewer bodies to fill gaps. Post snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker. If they crash down hard on the blocking scheme, look for the QB to bounce it outside for a bigger gain. Beware user controlled defenders spying from depth or safeties rotating down into the box presnap, since that signals the defense anticipates the QB run and will have numbers to the mountain point.

Usage Tips

Call this on short yardage or goal line situations where defenses expect pass out of shotgun personnel, since the QB run element catches base and nickel fronts off guard.

Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or more defenders in the box, this play loses value fast and you should audible to an RPO like RPO Peek Slant or RPO Alert Bubble instead.

Use this play early in a series to set up Mtn PA Counter Levels and Mtn PA Counter Boot later, since defenders start keying the QB run action and get sucked up, opening play action passing lanes downfield.

Against aggressive user blitzers who shoot gaps immediately at the snap, this play punishes overpursuit if your lead blocker can seal the edge defender or cutback lane.

Mix this in with Jet QB Sweep and HB Draw from the same set to keep the defense honest on QB run tendencies and force linebackers to slow play their reads.
