Breakdown

RPO Zone Read Bubble pairs an inside zone run with a bubble screen read to the offset receiver, giving the quarterback a true give or throw decision based on the alignment of the read defender (usually the flat defender or overhang linebacker). The blocking scheme is inside zone with the offensive line working combo blocks and climbing to the second level, while the bubble route serves as the pre-snap and post-snap answer to defenders crashing down on the run fit. This is a true RPO that beats both man and zone coverage since the read is based on defender leverage rather than coverage shell, making it a versatile chain-mover and explosive play option.

Defensive Reads

Watch the alignment of the slot cornerback or overhang defender pre-snap since a tight alignment on the bubble receiver signals a sit and jump technique that kills the screen read. Post-snap, track whether the flat defender crashes toward the mesh point or stays home on the bubble receiver to know if the quarterback will pull or hand off. Man coverage with no extra flat defender is where this play thrives since the bubble receiver gets a clean release against a covering corner playing off leverage. Zone coverage with a hard box crash below the sticks turns this into an easy bubble pull for a schemed explosive gain. User controlled linebackers who key the mesh point and sit in the passing lane can bait the quarterback into a bad hand off read, so scout for a spy or lurk defender sitting at the second level before calling this play.

Usage Tips

Key the flat defender or slot corner before the snap to decide whether you plan to pull the bubble or trust the zone run.

If the defense shows a hard box with the overhang crashing down pre-snap, be ready to pull the bubble immediately at the snap for a numbers advantage on the perimeter.

Use this play on early downs in run heavy personnel to keep the defense honest and set up shell adjustments for later RPO Zone Peek or RPO Zone Alert Bubble calls.

Motion or shift the offset receiver pre-snap to bait the defense into showing man coverage, which tips the run key for the zone hand off.

Sequence this with RPO Read Bubble and RPO Peek Slant in the same drive to keep linebackers guessing between crashing the run fit and sitting on the bubble throw.
