PA Read is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Doubles Offset Wk that uses a run fake to hold linebackers before attacking downfield. The backside receiver runs a deep crossing route to the far boundary while the two receivers on the strong side clear out with a deep out breaking to the sideline and an underneath in route working back across the middle, creating a natural high low read against zone. The play side tight end or receiver near the core stays in as an extra blocker while the running back fakes the handoff and offers protection, giving the quarterback time to work through his progression from the deep crosser to the intermediate in route.

Defensive Reads

Against Cover 3 the deep crosser can sit down in the void behind the underneath zone defenders, so as the offense look to hit that window quickly before the flow catches up. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the deep crosser, especially if the corner is playing outside leverage pre-snap. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow zone or spying the quarterback, since he can jump the underneath in route if the fake does not sell. Cover 2 shells with safeties rolled hard to one side can take away the deep out route to the sideline, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and check down. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge on the play action side will collapse the pocket quickly, so if you see linebackers creeping up pre-snap expect pressure and be ready to throw off rhythm.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake by holding the ball on the fake handoff a beat longer to freeze linebackers and open passing lanes underneath.

Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage since the run action is more believable and defenses bite harder on the fake.

Check safety depth pre-snap, if you see two deep safeties sitting at 10 to 12 yards the deep crosser may get taken away so prioritize the underneath in route instead.

Pair this call with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Read Bubble earlier in a drive so defenders start respecting the run action, making the play action fake here more effective.

Hot route the underneath in route to a shallow drag if you are facing aggressive linebacker blitzes, giving the quarterback a faster underneath outlet against pressure.
