Orbit PA X Spot is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Doubles Offset Wk that uses HB orbit motion across the backfield to sell run action before the QB works the Spot concept to the boundary. Off the play fake, the outside receiver runs a corner route while the inside receiver sits down on the spot/hitch and a shallow crosser clears underneath, creating a high low read on that side while both backside receivers push vertical on go routes to hold the safeties. The primary read progression starts with the spot/hitch underneath, then works to the corner route as the deep half opens up, making this a strong Cover 3 beater that also stresses Cover 1 with the orbit motion creating a natural rub or pick opportunity.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap identify single high versus two high safeties, a single high shell tells you Cover 3 or Cover 1 is likely and the corner route has room to work Watch the flat and curl defenders after the snap, if they widen with the corner route the spot underneath will be wide open If a linebacker or slot defender chases the orbit motion man man to man, expect Cover 1 or Cover 0 and prioritize the deep corner route before the blitz arrives User controlled defenders who sit in the throwing lane of the spot route can bait a checkdown, so be ready to climb the pocket and reset your eyes to the corner This play struggles against aggressive Cover 4 or press Cover 2 looks where corners jump the underneath spot route, in those situations check down to the backside vertical or throw it away

Usage Tips

Use the orbit motion pre-snap to identify man versus zone, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you are almost certainly seeing man coverage and can key the QB to the corner route sooner

Attack Cover 3 shells by hitting the spot route quickly underneath the flat defender before the corner route comes open behind him

Against Cover 1 look for the orbit motion to create natural traffic for the shallow crosser, this can spring him wide open against man match linebackers

Best called on second and medium or third and short where the play fake has a chance to hold linebackers and open passing lanes underneath
