Orbit PA X Spot uses orbit motion from the backfield across the formation before the play-action fake, pulling linebacker eyes and selling the run to hold the second level. Off the fake, both outside receivers push vertical on skinny post/go stems to clear out zone coverage while the X receiver runs the spot route underneath, sitting down in the void left by the motion man's flat route replacement. This is a classic Cover 3 beater built on high-low flat-to-corner spacing, with the primary read starting at the spot route underneath and working up to the vertical shots if the flat defender jumps the short throw.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flat defender or curl-to-flat linebacker at the snap, if they bite on the play-action fake or widen with the orbit motion they leave the spot route wide open underneath. Identify single-high safety shells before the snap, since Cover 3 and single-high man leave the intermediate spot route zone exposed to the primary read. Key the cornerback depth on the vertical routes, soft corners playing off coverage invite an easy completion on the spot route while press corners can be attacked with the go routes. User linebackers who spy or rob the underneath crossing window can jump the spot route timing, so be ready to reset to the vertical shot routes if you see a defender sitting in that throwing lane post-snap. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties compress the vertical windows, forcing you to rely on the spot route and any checkdown options rather than pushing the ball downfield.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion to confirm man versus zone, if the defender follows the orbit man across the formation you are facing man coverage and should look to the vertical routes for a shot play.
Against Cover 3 shells, trust the spot route as your primary read since it settles into the natural seam behind the flat defender and in front of the curl-to-flat zone dropper.
Call this on early downs or second and medium to keep defenses honest with the run fake, since the play-action freeze on linebackers is most effective when defenses respect your run game tendencies.
Pair this with RPO Orbit Bubble and RPO Peek Orbit Bubble earlier in a series so the defense keys the same orbit motion as a run threat, making the play-action fake on Orbit PA X Spot hit even harder later in the game.
If the flat defender sinks under the spot route, progress your eyes to the far vertical route working against a cleared out zone for an explosive gain over the middle.
