Redzone HB Corner is a man beater built out of the Shotgun Doubles Offset Wk set that isolates the running back on a corner route out of the backfield against a linebacker or safety in coverage. The outside receivers occupy the cornerbacks with vertical or breaking routes, clearing the flat and pylon area for the HB to work the corner in tight spaces near the goal line. The primary read progression starts with the HB corner route working to the boundary, then works inside to the underneath crosser or shallow option if the backer sits on the running back or the corner route gets squeezed by the sideline.

Defensive Reads

Identify if a linebacker or safety is aligned over the HB pre-snap since this route wins almost every time against a slower defender in man coverage. Watch for a flat defender or robber sitting underneath since that defender can undercut the corner route if the QB throws it too early. Zone coverage with a hard outside corner sitting on the boundary route can shut this down, so check if the cornerback stays low and outside instead of biting on the receiver routes. Look for a Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell where the corner and safety both squeeze the sideline, since that eliminates the throwing window for the HB corner route. Post-snap, watch for a linebacker blitz off the edge that could disrupt the timing of the throw before the HB even gets into his route stem.

Call this play inside the 15 yard line where the reduced field width forces linebackers into tough man matchups against the HB out of the backfield.

Check the defense pre-snap for man coverage indicators like a linebacker shading over the backfield or a safety cheating down into the box.

If you see a Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell with the corner sitting deep and outside, hot route the HB corner route to a whip or option route to create separation underneath instead of forcing it into the sideline.

Pair this play with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Glance Slant from the same set so the defense has to respect the quick game before you hit them with the HB corner shot in the red zone.

Use motion or a quick pre-snap shift to identify if a defender is locked onto the HB man to man, then trust the corner route win against linebackers who lack the speed to turn and run.
