Orbit Inside Zone is a zone run out of Shotgun Doubles Offset Wk that uses orbit motion across the backfield to influence the defense before the snap. The diagram shows the offset back motioning through and getting the handoff, with the offensive line executing inside zone blocking and displacing the front to create a running lane between the tackles. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes and gap-exchange linebackers, with the primary read being the playside double team and backside cutback lane off the zone blocking flow.
Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard toward the motion it opens a cutback lane away from the flow. Identify whether the defense is in a one high or two high shell before the snap, single high alignments often mean an extra run defender in the box. Key on the defensive line gap discipline, if the interior linemen are stunting or crashing across the formation it can blow up the zone blocking scheme. User-controlled defenders flowing hard to the motion side create the biggest risk for a backside cutback, spy that defender if you are on defense. Stacked fronts with linebackers at four yards or less of depth are built to shut this down since they can fill gaps quickly before the zone blocks develop.
Use the orbit motion to check if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety down into the box, this tells you if you are facing man or zone pre-snap.
Run this against light boxes of six defenders or fewer, especially when the defense shows two high safeties before the snap.
Pair this with RPO Orbit Bubble and RPO Orbit Zone Peek from the same set so the defense cannot key on the motion without respecting the perimeter throw.
Trust the playside double team and stay patient, let the zone blocking develop before committing to a gap since the cutback lane often opens late.
Call this on early downs in normal or base personnel looks to keep the defense honest and set up your play-action shots later in the drive.
