RPO Power Peek is a true run pass option built off Power run blocking out of Shotgun Doubles Offset Wk, giving the offense a numbers based conflict read for defenders in the box. The QB reads the peek defender (typically the alley player or force defender) to decide between handing off the Power run to the HB or pulling and throwing a quick peek route to the slot or backside receiver. This play is a strong run and RPO hybrid that punishes light boxes and overaggressive linebackers, with the primary read progression being box count first, then the peek defender's reaction to the run action.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the peek defender, usually a linebacker or slot corner aligned near the box who has dual run and pass responsibility. Watch safety depth before the snap, a single high safety with a stacked box signals man coverage underneath and favors pulling the ball to throw the peek route. Post-snap, key the peek defender's first step, if he crashes down to defend the Power run, throw immediately since the window will be wide open. If the defense sits in a two high shell with the peek defender staying disciplined and reading the mesh point, this play gets shut down and you should trust the Power run blocking instead. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the peek route or a delayed blitz off the edge, since aggressive user play can jump the throw and turn it into a turnover if you force it late.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and if there are six or fewer defenders in the box, lean toward pulling and throwing the peek route immediately off the snap. Use this play on early downs like first and second and ten to stay ahead of the chains while keeping the defense honest against both run and pass. If the defense shows man coverage with the corner playing tight outside leverage, the peek route will win quickly since the defender has no help underneath. Pair this play with RPO Power Peek Slant and RPO Peek Slant in the same set to keep the defense guessing on whether the peek or slant window will be open, forcing linebackers to hesitate on run fits. Against teams that spam Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, sequence this with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Orbit Bubble to attack the same conflict defender from different angles and eventually break contain.
