RPO Peek Orbit Swing is a run pass option out of Shotgun Doubles Offset that pairs an inside zone run with an orbit motion swing to the backfield and a peek read on the backside. The blocking scheme is inside zone with the offensive line covering down while the QB reads a designated second level defender to decide run, peek throw, or swing pass to the motion back. The primary progression is peek defender first, if he crashes or widens with the swing motion the QB pulls and either hits the peek route on the backside or takes the zone run, making this an effective conflict play against both man and zone defenders who have to declare early.

Defensive Reads

Identify the conflict linebacker or slot defender assigned to the peek and swing concepts before the snap, his depth and leverage tells you which throw is open. Watch for defenders trailing the orbit motion man, if they mirror the swing across the formation the defense is in man coverage and the peek route behind them should be open. Zone defenses that stay disciplined and sink their linebackers into passing lanes while still respecting the run gap take away both the peek and swing options, forcing you into the inside zone run. User controlled defenders who jump the swing route immediately open up the peek throw over the middle, so track any manual spy or lurk animation right after the snap. Overloaded box fronts and run blitzes on early downs are the best trigger for this RPO since the extra defender crashing down removes himself from the passing conflict entirely.

Usage Tips

Use orbit motion pre-snap to force the defense to declare man or zone before the snap, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you have a clean man beater read on the swing. Check the flow of the second level defender you are reading for the peek route, if he sits or widens to take away the swing throw the ball into the peek window immediately. This play works best on early downs and short yardage third downs where defenses are more willing to sell out on the run look.
