Defensive Reads
Watch the second level linebacker assigned to the peek read before the snap, since his depth tells you whether he is spying run or sitting in the throwing lane. If the defense shows two high safeties with soft linebacker depth, expect the run action to be taken away, so bait the offense into throwing the slant into a sinking zone defender. Man coverage on the outside receiver with no underneath help is the biggest liability against this play, since the slant will separate quickly. Blitzing off the edge or through the peek gap forces a fast RPO decision, so if you can disguise the peek defender's assignment late, you can bait a bad handoff read into a stacked box. Zone drops from the flat defender that widen too quickly leave the slant window open, so squeeze that defender's zone drop and stay tight to the throwing lane to close the passing read.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and let the peek key decide run or pass instantly, since this play lives and dies on discipline in that pre-snap to post-snap read.
If the defense shows single high safety with the linebackers stacked tight, hand it off on Power and let your blockers work the alley.
If the peek defender crashes down on run flow, throw the slant hot immediately before the window closes, since this beats both man and zone coverage that overreacts to run action.
Use hot routes to adjust the flat route into a quicker out or speed out against teams that sit on the slant with a underneath zone defender.
