Breakdown

Mtn PA Y Corner is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Doubles Offset Wk that uses a fake handoff to hold the second level before working a three level stretch to the boundary. The Y (tight end) releases vertically then breaks into a corner route as the primary target, with two outside receivers running vertical seams to clear space and hold the safeties, while the HB releases into the flat as a checkdown after selling run action. This is a play-action man beater designed to attack single high safety looks, and the progression starts with the Y corner, works back to the vertical seam if the corner route is capped, and finishes with the HB flat route as the outlet.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with a single high safety is the biggest vulnerability here since the Y corner route creates immediate separation against a trailing linebacker or nickel defender in coverage. Watch the flat defender pre-snap, if a linebacker or corner sits low near the line of scrimmage the corner route behind him becomes a clean throwing window. Cover 3 with a hard-charging strong safety on run support opens up the Y corner route into the vacated deep third zone. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties are the counter, since the corner route runs directly into the safety's zone leverage, forcing you to check down to the seam or HB flat. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the Y route or dropping into a lurk technique underneath the corner route, since this is the primary way defenses take away the first read and force the checkdown.

Usage Tips

Sell the play-action fake by holding the ball long enough to freeze linebackers before your eyes go to the Y corner route.

Check pre-snap for single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3, since the corner route from the Y attacks the void behind the flat defender and in front of the deep third or deep half player.

If you see two deep safeties pre-snap, be ready to work the vertical seam route on the same side since Cover 2 corners will squeeze the corner route hard.

Use this play on early downs (first or second and medium) when defenses expect run action from the Doubles Offset Wk personnel look, since the play fake is more effective when run tendencies are established.

Pair this with Mtn HB Base or Inside Zone earlier in a drive to set up the play-action, then call Mtn PA Y Corner once the defense starts cheating linebackers toward the line of scrimmage.
