RPO Peek Slant is a run pass option out of Shotgun Doubles Offset Wk that pairs an inside zone run look with a two man peek slant concept to the closed side. The diagram shows both receivers from the offset side running slants that stack into a shallow read window, with the inside receiver breaking first and the outside receiver working over the top of him on a delayed angle. The read progression starts with the quarterback peeking the slant window immediately at the snap while giving the run its track, meaning this play is a run first RPO that beats light boxes and man coverage on the slant if the run key does not trigger.
Defensive Reads
Key the play side linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow in the slant window he is there to jump the peek read. Watch for user controlled defenders sinking under the slant stack, that is the biggest tell of a lurk designed to bait the quarterback into the peek throw. Identify single high versus two high shells before the snap, single high with an aggressive box usually means the run track is live and the slant window stays clean. Cover 3 sky and cover 1 with tight man on the slants tend to shut this down if the underneath defender stays disciplined and does not bite on run action. Post-snap, if the defensive line stunts hard into the run gaps and linebackers flow fast, the run track disappears and the quarterback should already be looking at the peek slant instead of forcing the handoff.
Usage Tips
Check the box count pre-snap and only pull the slant if you see six or fewer defenders in the run fit.
Peek the slant window early since the routes break fast, this is not a play where you can sit in the pocket and scan.
Against man coverage look for the inside slant receiver working open in the pick style stack before the outside receiver clears late.
Run this on early downs like first and ten to keep the defense honest on gap discipline, then come back with RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Read Bubble to attack the perimeter if they start crashing hard inside.
Pair this with RPO Power Peek Slant later in a series so the defense has to respect both the zone track and the power gap look before committing to the slant window.
