Mtn PA Flood is a play-action flood concept out of Shotgun Doubles Offset Wk that stacks three routes into one deep-to-short window on the same side of the field. The play-side receiver runs a deep corner/go route to clear the top, the TE or slot runs an out breaking route at the intermediate level, and the RB or inside receiver runs a flat/drag route to the boundary, creating a classic high low low flood against zone coverage. The play fakes an inside handoff first to hold linebackers and safeties, then the QB works the flood side from deepest route down to the shallow flat route as the primary progression.
Defensive Reads
Identify single high safety alignment pre-snap, this is the shell Mtn PA Flood is designed to attack with the vertical corner route stretching the deep third. Watch the flat defender or curl-flat zone player after the snap, if he sits on the shallow route the intermediate out route will be open behind him. Beware Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, the corner route loses its space advantage and the QB may need to check down to the flat route. Key the play-side linebacker's reaction to the run fake, if he stays home in coverage instead of stepping up the flood concept loses its window against the intermediate route. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in a shallow zone or lurking near the flat, this is the primary threat that can jump the underneath route and bait a bad throw.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs when you want to sell run action and punish safeties who bite on the play fake.
Check the middle of the field pre-snap: if you see a single high safety expect Cover 3 and trust the flood concept to stretch the zone defender horizontally.
Hot route the shallow flat route into a quick out if you are facing an aggressive underneath defender jumping the flat.
Pair this play with Inside Zone or Orbit Inside Zone earlier in a series so the play-action fake actually threatens linebackers and safeties.
Combine with Mtn Curl Combo or Mtn Y Shovel later in the drive to keep defenders guessing between the flood shell and quick game answers.
