Defensive Reads

Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed badly by the deep corner route since it stretches the sideline vertically. This play struggles against Cover 4 or quarters shells where two defenders can split the flood routes, so check for two deep safeties before committing to the deep shot. Blitz-heavy defenses that bring pressure off the edge can disrupt the play action fake before the routes fully develop, so identify overload blitz looks pre-snap and be ready to hot route or check down quickly.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or manageable third downs when you want to sell run action against aggressive run fits, since the play action freezes linebackers and safeties who bite on the fake. Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety rotating hard to the flood side, expect Cover 3 and trust the deep corner route to win over the top. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if the defense shows blitz, giving your quarterback an outlet away from the flood concept. Pair this with Mtn PA Counter Boot or Mtn PA Counter Levels in the same set so the defense has to respect multiple play action shots off similar formation and motion looks. Against teams that key on motion and jump the flat route, hold the ball an extra beat and let the deep corner route develop since the flood concept naturally clears out underneath defenders.
