Smash Return is a Cover 2 beater out of the Bunch Y-Flex set that combines a classic smash concept on the bunch side with a return route on the backside. From the bunch, one receiver runs a corner route stretching the deep outside while another sits underneath on a flat/hitch route, forcing the deep half safety and cornerback to choose. The backside receiver runs a return route (out and back inside), the bunch TE or slot works a deep in/dig crossing back toward the middle, and the motion man releases out of the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline, giving the quarterback a horizontal stretch read from the corner route down to the flat and across to the return route.
Look for two safeties deep pre-snap, that Cover 2 shell tells you the corner route on the bunch side is the primary answer against the cornerback's flat responsibility. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks with the underneath route the corner route is wide open behind him. Check linebacker depth over the middle, a shallow linebacker gets attacked by the deep in or dig route coming across from the bunch. If the defense shows man coverage with a defender trailing the motion man, the wheel route down the sideline is a lurk threat that can housed against slower linebackers. This play struggles against a hard Cover 3 buzz or a safety rotating down fast into the flat, since that extra body clogs both the flat and corner reads on the strength side.
Use this against two high safety shells since the corner and flat combo on the bunch side is a true Cover 2 beater that overloads the deep quarter defender.
Check the pre-snap alignment of the bunch corner and safety, if they are sitting on the flat you have the corner route wide open behind them.
Send the motion man early to identify man versus zone, if a defender follows him across the formation you are in man coverage and the wheel route becomes a big play option against a linebacker.
Hot route the underneath flat defender into a quick out if you see zone blitz pressure showing on the strength side, this gets the ball out fast before the return route develops.
Pair this play with Curls Y Swirl or Mtn Cross Out from the same set to keep the defense guessing between smash concepts and crossing concepts out of the identical bunch look.
