Breakdown

Dagger out of Shotgun Bunch Y-Flex is a classic vertical stretch concept designed to overload one side of the field with two deep routes stacked on top of a shallow drag. From the bunch alignment, the outside receiver runs a deep dig that settles in behind the linebackers while the seam runner blows straight through the top of the defense on a vertical route, creating a natural high-low read against zone drops. The backside receiver runs a shallow drag across the field as a checkdown and man-beater outlet, while the running back stays in to help protect against pressure, making this both a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater with the deep dig sitting in the void behind the corner and in front of the safety.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high shell, since this dictates whether the dig or the seam route is your primary target. Watch the flat defender and outside linebacker depth, if they sink too deep on the drag route it opens up easy yardage underneath for the checkdown. Post-snap, key the corner on the bunch side, if he sinks into a deep third or Cover 2 flat drop late, the dig route will sit wide open behind him. Beware of user controlled safeties or linebackers sitting in the passing lane, known as a lurk, since they can jump the dig route if the quarterback stares it down too long. This concept struggles against aggressive Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with disciplined zone drops, since the extra deep defender can help bracket the vertical seam and dig combination.

Usage Tips

Read the safety shell before the snap, if you see two high safeties the dig route sitting behind the corner and in front of the safety is your first read against Cover 2. Against Cover 3 or single high looks, take the vertical seam route since the deep third defender cannot cover both the dig and the seam at the same time. Use the shallow drag as your answer versus man coverage or when the pocket collapses quickly, since it clears underneath and gives you a built in checkdown. This play pairs extremely well with Curls Y Swirl and Flood from the same set, since both attack underneath zones and can confuse linebackers who start jumping the dig route on tendency. Call this on early downs in medium to long yardage situations where you have time to let the dig and seam routes develop, since both routes take a few seconds to clear the underneath defenders.
