Breakdown

49er HB Choice out of Shotgun Bunch Y-Flex is a pass play built around a choice route concept for the running back, paired with a bunch alignment that creates natural rub action against man coverage. The HB reads the defender leverage out of the backfield and breaks inside or outside based on that key, while the bunch receivers work options and flex routes to occupy underneath zone defenders and pull man defenders into traffic. This is primarily a man beater thanks to the bunch spacing and natural pick opportunities, and the primary read progression starts with the HB choice route before working to the Y-Flex option route as the second read.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment on the bunch side since tight man coverage with no help over the top is where this play hits hardest. Watch for a linebacker or slot defender shifting late to shadow the bunch formation, which signals man coverage and tells you the pick action will spring the choice route. Post-snap, key the flat defender and any user-controlled linebacker sitting underneath since a lurking defender in the shallow zone can jump the HB choice route and blow up the primary read. Zone coverage with disciplined underneath drops and a deep half safety over the bunch side is the main counter, since it clogs the choice route window and forces you to the secondary Y-Flex option. Watch blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the HB releasing into his route removes a blocker and can leave the quarterback exposed if the choice route is not open immediately.

Usage Tips

Motion the flex tight end pre-snap to identify man versus zone coverage based on whether a defender follows him across the formation.

Use the HB choice route as your first read against man coverage since the running back can win with a simple leverage read on his defender.

If the defense shows a two-high shell, hot route the outside bunch receiver into a vertical release to stress the deep safeties before working back down to the HB.

Pair this play with Curls Y Swirl or Spacing Switch earlier in a series to condition the defense to sit on underneath zone drops, then hit HB Choice when they overplay the shallow stuff.

Best called on second and short to second and medium since the choice concept gives multiple answers versus both blitz and coverage without needing a huge chunk of yardage.
