Spacing out of Shotgun Bunch Y-Flex spreads five receivers into horizontal stops at three distinct levels, with the bunch side running a flat route underneath and a deep out breaking to the sideline, while the backside single receiver runs a quick out. The Y-Flex TE releases from the bunch on an intermediate out, giving the quarterback a stretched horizontal ladder from flat to sideline on both sides of the field. This is a classic zone beater built to attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 by putting stress on the flat and curl defenders, with the primary read starting to the bunch side flat-to-out combo before working backside to the single receiver out route.
Defensive Reads
Check for two deep safeties pre-snap, since Cover 4 corners playing off will get stressed by the sideline out routes with no help underneath. Watch the flat defender and curl-to-flat linebacker post-snap, if he sinks too deep the underside flat route from the bunch is wide open. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is a bad matchup for the offense here since the routes are designed to sit against zone, so expect this play to struggle against Cover 1 or Cover 0 pressure. Look for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone jumping the flat route, that tips zone coverage and means the QB should climb the ladder to the deep out instead. Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers with no delayed underneath zone drop can disrupt the timing, so watch the mike linebacker for blitz indicators before the snap.

Identify the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth, two deep safeties with soft corners signals Cover 4 and this concept eats it alive.
Throw with anticipation to the out routes before the receiver breaks, since Spacing lives on timing rather than separation created after the catch.
Use the flat route as your outlet against Cover 3 sky or cloud looks, then progress to the deep out sitting in the void behind the corner.
Pair this play with HB Choice or Inside Zone in your play-calling sequence to keep linebackers honest on early downs before hitting Spacing on second or third down.
Best called on third and short to third and medium since every route sits down quickly and gives the QB layered horizontal options against zone drops.
