The bunch side runs a three-level stack: the inside receiver runs a shallow cross underneath, the middle man runs a deep out breaking to the sideline, and the outside receiver clears vertically down the seam, while the backside receiver runs a corner route from the motion path. This is primarily a man beater, using the shallow crosser to pick off trailing defenders and the corner route to attack outside leverage, with the shallow cross as the primary read and the corner route as the deep alert.

Defensive Reads

Read the flow of the second and third level defenders at the snap to see if they widen out to chase the jet motion, which signals man coverage and opens the shallow cross. Watch for a linebacker or slot corner sinking into the shallow zone, since that indicates a zone drop that will clog the underneath crosser and force you to the deep out or corner route instead. Key the free safety depth before the snap, a deep single-high safety suggests Cover 3 or Cover 1 where the corner route can be attacked on the outside seam. Identify blitz packages by checking if the slot defenders crash down at the snap instead of covering routes, since a nano blitz off the edge will require a quick throw to the shallow cross to beat pressure. Cover 2 shells with squatting corners on the outside route and a deep-dropping middle linebacker on the shallow crosser are the toughest matchup, forcing you to check down or take the checkdown option instead of forcing the crosser.

Usage Tips

Use the jet motion pre-snap to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.

If the defender trails the motion man in man coverage, look immediately to the shallow cross since the traffic from the bunch will spring him open against trailing linebackers.

Against zone shells, work the deep out from the middle bunch receiver since it sits down in the void behind underneath zone defenders and in front of deep thirds.

Hot route the vertical seam runner into a deep dig or hold him as a decoy against two-high safety looks to keep the safety from sinking onto the shallow cross.

Pair this play with HB Choice or RPO Alert Out from the same set to keep linebackers honest on run fits before coming back to the shallow cross for easy yardage.
