Breakdown

Redzone Crossers is a five man route concept out of Bunch Y-Flex that overloads one side with three crossing routes stacked at different depths while isolating a single receiver on a deep dig away from the bunch. The bunch side runs a corner route to the flat, a deep in breaking crosser and a shallow drag underneath, creating natural traffic for defenders in man coverage and horizontal stretch versus zone. The lone receiver runs a deep crossing route from the backside that settles in the middle of the field, giving you a true progression read from the shallow drag to the crossers underneath and finally to the backside dig if the underneath windows are clogged.

Defensive Reads

Presnap check safety alignment, if both safeties are deep and outside the numbers expect zone coverage and prioritize the backside crosser sitting down in the middle of the field. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, shallow drops signal zone and you should look to the deep crossers crossing behind them for explosive yardage. If the defense shows man coverage with a corner shaded inside on the bunch, expect natural pick action to spring the shallow drag or the deep crosser open quickly. Beware of a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, this can jump the backside crossing route so keep an eye on that defender before committing to your final read. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can take away the corner route to the flat, so be ready to work back to the crossers underneath if that route gets squeezed early.

Usage Tips

Use this play in the redzone or in third and medium situations where the compressed field forces defenders into tight man coverage or shallow zone drops.

Presnap identify if the defense is showing man or zone by checking the depth of the corner over the bunch, if he is playing tight to the line expect man coverage and target the natural pick action created by the crossers.

Hot route the shallow drag into a quick out if you see a blitz look with fewer than five defenders in coverage, this gives you a fast release valve versus nano blitzes.

Combine this play with Z Shallow Cross or Bench Pivot from the same set to keep the defense guessing on crossing concepts while disguising your true redzone scoring route.

Look to the backside crosser late in the down against zone coverage since linebackers and safeties are often occupied by the bunch side traffic, leaving the middle of the field open for a big chunk gain.
