The primary read progression starts with the box count and second level defender triggers pre snap, then keys the flow of the second level defender assigned to the alert receiver post snap to decide pull or hand off.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side linebacker depth and trigger speed at the snap, if he sits or slow plays the run fit the zone hand off is live. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high with an aggressive box favors pulling and throwing the alert quickly. Look for a user controlled defender flashing down into the alert throwing lane, this lurk threat can jump the quick route so have a check down or be ready to tuck and run.
