Breakdown

Choice Shallow Dig lines up out of the Bunch Y-Flex bunch set with all three receivers stacked tight to the formation. From the bunch, one receiver runs a deep dig that cuts hard across the middle, another works a corner route up the sideline, and the third releases underneath on a shallow crosser that clears out to the opposite side. The backside receiver runs a shallow cross to the flat while the running back releases out of the backfield on a swing/whip route to the boundary, giving this concept both a man beater shallow cross and a zone beater dig combo. Primary read progression starts with the shallow crosser working underneath against man leverage, then works to the dig sitting down in the intermediate zone, with the corner route as the home run shot against single high coverage.

Defensive Reads

Identify the shell pre-snap, single high safety alignment opens up the corner route while two high shells force you to lean on the shallow cross and dig combo underneath. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard to cover the dig lane, the shallow crosser is wide open in the vacated shallow zone. Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow cross window, this play is vulnerable to a lurking linebacker who jumps the shallow cross and baits a turnover. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the dig route settling into a natural pick from the bunch traffic, look for rubs created by the stacked alignment. Cover 3 sky or cloud looks can shut down the corner route since the flat defender has help over the top, so shift focus to the dig sitting down in the intermediate hole against the middle linebacker.

Usage Tips

Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators like a defender lined up in the bunch mugging the receivers, since the shallow cross and dig combo destroys man leverage when defenders trail through traffic.

Use the shallow cross as a rat killer against zone drops by reading the underneath linebacker, if he sinks with the dig, dump it to the shallow crosser for an easy pickup.

Hot route the corner route into a fade if you see a single high safety cheating toward the dig, this removes a defender from the shallow crosser's window and creates a one on one shot down the sideline.

Best called on second and medium to third and long where the dig route settles into the sticks and the shallow cross keeps the chains moving underneath.
