Breakdown

Inside Zone out of Shotgun Bunch Y-Flex is a pure zone run play, shown by the red run arrow hitting the play side gap behind the bunch alignment. The offensive line flows in unison to the play side, double teaming at the point of attack and reading the defensive front to cut back if the backside lane opens. The bunch receivers and flexed TE stay in to build the run fit numbers advantage and hold second level defenders with their release threat, with the primary read being the first available crease at the point of attack and the backside cutback lane if the front slants hard.

Defensive Reads

Watch for stacked box fronts with six or more defenders, this shuts down inside zone efficiency and should trigger a check to a pass concept instead. Identify linebacker depth pre-snap, linebackers sitting shallow will fill gaps quickly and force an early cutback read. Look for user-controlled defenders flowing hard to the bunch side, this often leaves the backside cutback lane wide open. Zone coverage shells with safeties rotating down into the box are the biggest threat to this run, man coverage looks with defenders occupied by the bunch tend to leave more room. Watch the defensive line alignment for slanting fronts, a hard slant away from the play call can be exploited with a quick cutback if your blockers seal the edge.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive front pre-snap for the number of defenders in the box versus your blockers, if the box is light this play hits fast and hard.

Use the bunch alignment to bait linebackers into flowing hard to the trips side before cutting back if the backside is soft.

Pair this with RPO Alert Out or RPO Zone Alert Omaha from the same set to keep defenses honest against a light box without changing your formation look.

On early downs use this to stay balanced and set up play-action shots like PA Post Y-Corner or PA Post X-corner later in the drive from the same personnel and set.

Use manual control on your HB to press the hole late and trust the zone blocking to declare the cutback lane, do not commit to a landmark too early.
