Mtn Drive Zig is a bunch-based dropback pass concept out of Shotgun Bunch Y-Flex that stacks a deep zig with a drive concept underneath. The backside X runs a lone deep out breaking to the sideline while the bunch releases: the point man cuts vertical then breaks flat over the middle, the second bunch receiver runs the zig back across the field, and the third climbs to a shallow drive route working underneath. This is a Cover 4 beater built to attack the seams and hi-lo the flat defender, with the zig sitting down in the void behind linebackers and in front of deep safeties, and the primary read progression starts with the zig crossing route before working down to the drive route underneath and out to the backside out route if the middle is clogged.
Watch for two deep safeties at depth pre-snap, this is the classic Cover 4 shell that this play is designed to exploit through the zig sitting in the seam. If the strong safety rotates down into the box before the snap, expect a Cover 3 buzz look that can undercut the zig route with a robber technique, so be ready to check down to the drive route. User-controlled defenders sitting in the middle hook zone or lurking near the zig's break point are the biggest threat to this concept, since a good user read can jump the route and create a pick six opportunity. Linebacker depth at the snap matters, if they sink immediately into deep zone drops the drive route underneath becomes wide open, but if they stay shallow to defend the drive route the zig will have a clean throwing lane. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play struggles most, since the zig has to fight through traffic in the bunch release and can get picked off by physical corners at the line.
Check pre-snap for two deep safeties splitting the field evenly, that alignment tells you Cover 4 is likely in play and the zig route will sit in the soft spot behind the linebackers. Use motion out of the bunch to identify man versus zone before the snap, if defenders shift with the motion man you are looking at man coverage and should prioritize the deep zig over the drive route. Hot route the backside X into a hitch or comeback against aggressive corners playing hard outside leverage to give yourself a quick alert throw. Pair this play with Mtn Cross Out or Mtn Double Cross earlier in the drive so the defense has to respect both the deep zig and the crossing combos, setting up big play windows later. On third and medium, target the drive route as your first read since it settles in soft zone areas and gives a reliable move-the-sticks option before working to the zig.
