Breakdown

Branch Return is a bunch based route concept out of Shotgun Bunch Y-Flex that uses a motion man out of the backfield to sell a swing look before he wheels vertically up the sideline as a late outlet. From the bunch, one receiver runs an out and up (branch route) to the corner while another sits underneath on a return/pivot route working back to the quarterback, and the third bunch receiver clears out on a deep vertical to stretch the defense. This is a man beater built to exploit rerouted defenders in the bunch, with the primary read starting on the deep vertical clear out, then working down to the branch route breaking outside, and finishing with the return route as the checkdown against a hard squeeze.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat defender or overhang linebacker on the motion man's release, a hard step outside or a rat drop into the pivot area signals zone match rather than true man coverage. Watch the corner aligned over the bunch, if he sinks with the branch route's outside break instead of jumping it, that is a green light to trust the throw versus off man coverage. Identify two high safety shells pre-snap, if the defense rotates a safety down to help over the top of the branch route, expect the deep clear out route to be taken away and look immediately to the return route underneath. Post-snap, feel for a delayed blitz or nano blitz off the edge since the bunch alignment can create natural rub protection issues, if the quarterback feels immediate pressure, hit the check down on the return route quickly. Beware of aggressive man teams that use a lurking linebacker to sit on in cut routes, if you see a defender sitting flat footed in the middle of the field before the snap, that lurk threat can jump the return route and bait a turnover.

Usage Tips

Use this against man coverage teams that like to press or match up across the bunch since the natural rub created by the formation forces defenders to fight through traffic.

Pre-snap, check if the defense is showing man or zone match by looking at the alignment of the bunch defenders, if they are stacked tight and shading outside, the branch route to the corner has a strong chance to win.

Send the motion man early and watch the linebacker or slot defender's reaction, if he stays flat footed or bites on the swing fake, the wheel route up the sideline is a home run shot against blown coverage.

Combine this with Curls Y Swirl or Mtn Cross Out from the same set so the defense sees similar bunch action and cannot key on the motion tendency, keeping them honest against both run away and route away concepts.

This works best on second and medium to second and long where defenses often play off man or match zone, giving the branch route room to break outside before the corner recovers.
