HB Slip Screen out of Bunch Y-Flex releases the running back to the flat while the offensive line sets up a screen wall in front of him. From the bunch alignment, two receivers push vertical stems (one up the seam, one on a corner breaking route) while the third bunch receiver runs a shallow crosser to occupy underneath defenders and clear a lane for the screen. The backfield read is simple: the QB looks off the defense and dumps it to the HB releasing left as the linemen get out ahead to block, making this a designed screen pass built to bait pressure and beat the blitz.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with blitz packages is the primary weakness this play attacks, since rushers flow upfield and away from the screen lane. Watch linebacker depth pre snap. Linebackers stacked tight to the line or showing blitz indicators confirm the screen will hit. Post snap, identify any user controlled defender sitting in a lurk or spy technique near the line of scrimmage, since a disciplined spy can blow this play up before it develops. Zone coverage shells with underneath defenders sitting and reading the quarterback are the counter to this concept, especially if a linebacker or slot corner stays home instead of dropping deep. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with disciplined zone drops and no blitz, expect the underneath defender to close the screen lane quickly.

Call this on early downs or third and short when you expect pressure, since aggressive pass rushers and blitzers run themselves out of the play.

Check the box count pre snap. If you see six or more defenders showing blitz looks or crashing off the edge, this is your answer.

Use the hot route menu to keep an extra lineman in if you diagnose a delayed blitz or a spy, since the timing of the screen depends on your blockers getting outside.
