Mtn Double Cross

Breakdown

Mtn Double Cross is a man beater out of the Bunch Y-Flex formation that sends two crossing routes from the bunch alignment to create natural rub traffic against man coverage defenders. The route combo works with a deep dig or corner route tagged to the flex tight end for a zone conversion window if the defense drops into cover 3 or cover 4. The primary read progression starts with the shallow crosser working left to right, then climbs to the deep cross if the underneath defenders bail on the rub, and finishes with the flex tight end as a backside answer if linebackers collapse on the crossers.

Defensive Reads

Check the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety usually signals man coverage underneath which plays right into the natural rub concept. Watch the flat defenders and underneath linebackers immediately after the snap, if they sink into passing lanes instead of chasing the crossers you are likely seeing a zone drop and should redirect to the flex tight end. Man coverage with press corners at the line gets beaten badly by the rub since the bunch alignment makes it hard for defenders to fight through traffic. Cover 3 with a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field is the biggest threat to this concept, since that user controlled defender can jump the shallow crosser before it clears. Blitz heavy looks with man coverage behind them are dangerous pre-snap reads, if you see extra rushers crashing off the edge get the ball out on the first crosser quickly before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion out of the bunch to force the defense to declare man or zone before the snap, this is your key to picking the right hot route. If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, trust the natural rub from the bunch alignment and take the first crosser that clears traffic. Against zone shells, look to the flex tight end on the deep breaking route since the crossers will settle into soft spots rather than separating cleanly. This play works best on second and medium or third and medium since the crossing routes need time to develop and a shorter throw window can bait an early user pick attempt. Pair this with Mtn Cross Out or Mtn Cross Stop Post from the same set to keep the defense guessing between crossing combos and out breaking combos off identical formation and personnel looks. Sequence this with HB Choice earlier in a series to get linebackers sitting on shorter routes, then hit the double cross when they overcommit to the flat.
