Mtn Double Post Reverse Dragon is a trick play run play out of the Bunch Y-Flex formation that disguises a reverse behind a double post concept designed to hold the safeties. The bunch alignment sends two receivers on post routes to attack the middle of the field and stress Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells while the backfield action sets up the reverse handoff to the flanking receiver coming across the formation. The primary read progression starts with the reverse look: sell the initial flow, get eyes to the second level defenders and pursuit angles, and only pull the double posts as the secondary answer if the defense crashes hard on the reverse action and vacates the middle of the field.

Defensive Reads

Watch for safeties cheating down into the box pre-snap, which tells you the defense is selling out on the run fake and the double posts will have a soft landing behind them. If the cornerbacks bail deep at the snap and stay disciplined on their post assignments, the reverse becomes your best answer since the defense is playing pass first. User linebackers who key on the backfield reverse action and flow hard to the sideline will get gashed by the double post concept sitting behind them in the vacated middle zone. Against Cover 4, the play is designed to beat the quarters shell by forcing the safeties to declare on the reverse or the post, so watch which safety commits and throw opposite his help. Nano blitzes or aggressive edge pressure can blow up the reverse handoff before it develops, so if you see a defender crashing unblocked off the edge, abort to the double post read immediately.

Usage Tips

Call this play when defenders are flowing fast to the ball on outside runs, since overaggressive linebackers and corners will bite on the reverse action and open up the double posts behind them.

Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing zone or man, if defenders shift with the motion man it signals man coverage and you should lean toward the reverse rather than the post combo.

Against Cover 2, target the double posts immediately since the safeties have to split the field and the seam between them opens up before the corner reverse fake even develops.

Mix this call into your sequence after running outside zone or jet sweep concepts from this same formation so linebackers key run flow and bite on the reverse fake instead of respecting the post routes.

Best used on early downs or in short yardage situations where defenses expect run, since the trick element loses value on clear passing downs when defenders sit back in coverage.
