Presnap, check if the defense is showing two deep safeties with the corner over the bunch playing off, this is the clearest indicator of quarters or Cover 4 and means the switch release and dig should have room to operate. Watch the linebackers depth at the snap, if they sink hard with the switch release’s vertical push, the dig route sitting underneath becomes wide open, if they stay shallow, that same window closes and the QB needs to reset to the corner or over route. User the deep half safety to the bunch side, since a good user can rob the corner route or crash down on the dig before it settles, forcing the QB to hold the ball longer than ideal. Man coverage with press corners on the bunch can disrupt timing on the switch release, so be ready to hot route or check to a quicker breaking concept if you see man alignment and no help over the top. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can undercut the backside over route, so key that defender’s drop before committing to the crossing route as a checkdown.
