Switch Mills is a Mills concept out of Bunch Y-Flex, tagged specifically as a Cover 4 beater. Off the bunch alignment the two outside receivers run a switch release into a deep post and a corner route that stretch the seam and sideline, while the inline receiver from the bunch runs a deep dig that sits behind the linebackers and in front of the safeties. The backside X runs an over route across the field as a fourth read, and the RB stays in to help protect off the blue check-release read. Primary progression is post to corner on the switch release first, then work back to the deep dig sitting in the middle of the field, with the backside over as the final outlet against soft zone coverage.
Defensive Reads
Identify two high safeties pre-snap since this play is specifically schemed to attack Cover 4 shells with the post-corner switch creating natural conflict for the deep quarter defenders. Watch for the switch release at the snap, in man coverage this forces defenders to cross and communicate, and any hesitation opens a throwing window on the post route immediately. Key the middle linebacker or hook defender depth after the snap, if he sinks too deep on the dig route the QB will look to the backside over route for an easy completion. This concept struggles against Cover 3 because the deep middle defender can rob the post and dig routes in the same throwing lane, so expect defenses to roll to single high shells as a counter. Watch for user blitz pressure off the edge since the RB is only a check-release option, if the defense brings a nano blitz look the quarterback needs to get through his post-corner read fast or check it down before the protection breaks down.
Usage Tips
Call this on second or third and long when you expect a two high safety shell since the entire concept is built to attack Cover 4 and Cover 2 shells. Pre-snap, check the corners aligned over the bunch, if they are playing outside leverage the switch release will confuse man coverage assignments and create a natural pick. Hot route the RB out of pass protection into a checkdown flare if you see a lurking linebacker sitting on the deep dig, this gives you a fifth option underneath. Against single high safety looks, switch to Dagger or Mtn Dagger Sit from this same set since Mills concepts lose value versus Cover 3 with a deep middle defender sitting in the throwing lane.
