Jet Sweep out of Shotgun 5WR Trio motions a receiver across the formation at the snap to catch a quick handoff, hugging the line as blockers on the perimeter set up crack blocks and lead paths to the edge. This is a pure run play designed to attack the flow of the defense with speed, using the jet motion to get a numbers advantage on the outside before the line sets. The primary read is the edge, get to the sideline off the sweep motion and press the point of attack, then cut upfield off the first color you see (blocker or defender) based on how fast the defense flows to the ball.
Watch for user-controlled defenders flowing hard with the jet motion before the snap, disciplined players will stay home on the backside to prevent the cutback. Fast flow linebackers and slot corners who crash down on motion are the biggest threat to blow this play up for a loss, look for defenses that key run based on personnel or formation tendencies. Edge defenders who maintain outside contain will force the ball carrier to bounce or cut inside, so identify if the defensive end or outside linebacker is squeezing the edge before the snap. Zone coverage shells with linebackers sitting in short zones are more vulnerable since those linebackers react slower to the sweep motion compared to man coverage defenders who trail receivers. Look for safety rotation post-snap, if a safety flies down quickly to the sweep side it signals the defense diagnosed the run and you may want to check to a play-action or screen next play.
Use pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into overplaying the flow, if the defense shifts hard with the jet motion you know you are facing base flow and can gash them if the edge sets up clean.
Diagnose the defensive front before the snap, this play struggles against fast flow defenses and disciplined edge defenders who stay home instead of following motion.
Call this on early downs or short yardage to keep the defense honest, then pair it with QB Draw or WR Screens from the same set to punish defenders who key on lateral run action.
If the defense shows a heavy box or run blitz look, check to a quick game concept like Stick or Slants in this set instead, since Jet Sweep loses value against extra defenders in the box.
Vary your pre-snap motion direction and tempo so defenders cannot key the sweep side just from formation recognition, this keeps the defense guessing between run and pass.
