Breakdown

Jet Power Read is a run based RPO out of Shotgun 5WR Trio that pairs jet motion across the formation with a power read blocking scheme up front. The offensive line pulls the backside guard to lead through the hole while the QB reads the play side end or first unblocked defender to decide between handing off, keeping it himself, or pulling it for the jet sweep option depending on personnel package. Primary read progression is jet motion man first (if defense follows the motion man across, hand off inside), then the read defender on the edge to decide keep versus give, making this a true triple option run concept rather than a straight dropback pass beater.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end or outside linebacker first, if he sits and reads instead of attacking the mesh point he is playing the option correctly and forcing a tougher decision. Key the alignment of the second level defenders before the snap, stacked linebackers who cheat toward the jet motion side signal man coverage or a run blitz keyed on motion. Look for a slot corner or safety flying downhill immediately at the snap, that usually means a run blitz or contain call designed to blow up the read before it starts. Man coverage teams that chase the jet motion man across the field open up cutback lanes on the inside handoff, exploit that vacated space with the give. Zone defenses that stay disciplined and keep linebackers square to the box tend to shut this down by forcing the QB to make a tight, high risk pull decision under pressure.

Usage Tips

Check the jet motion defender pre snap, if a linebacker or safety runs with the motion across the formation that is a strong indicator of man coverage and a green light to hand the ball off into the vacated box.

Use this on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, since the multiple options stress defenders who are still fitting their run keys.

If the defense shows a hard edge crash from the read defender, pull the ball and let the QB work the perimeter with the jet action rather than forcing it inside.

Mix this in with Jet Sweep and PA Jet Sweep from the same set so the jet motion look becomes a conditioned response for the defense, then hit Jet Power Read to punish overaggressive flow to the sweep side.

Against heavy blitz fronts, audible the backside receiver into a quick hot route or bubble screen concept so the QB has an outlet if the mesh point gets blown up before the read develops.
