Shock Slot Option is a five wide pass concept out of the Shotgun 5WR Trio formation with no run blocker declared, meaning all five eligibles are running routes. The backside X runs a vertical seam up the numbers while the inside slot runs a shallow drag underneath, and to the trio side the outside receiver bends a deep corner route while the innermost slot works a quick option route off the line with the middle trio receiver clearing vertically as a decoy on a skinny post. The red rushing arrow on the point receiver shows a hot vertical release used as a clock beater against man coverage. This is a man beater at its core, and the primary read progression starts with the slot option route, then works to the corner route breaking outside, then comes back to the deep seam if the defense rolls coverage away from the trio side.

Defensive Reads

Watch the slot cornerback's alignment before the snap, if he is playing outside leverage the option route will break inside for an easy pitch and catch. Key the middle linebacker's depth at the snap, if he sinks into a deep zone drop it signals zone coverage and the option receiver should sit down in the void instead of continuing his route. Identify single high versus two high safety shells, single high opens up the corner route on the trio side while two high shells tend to squeeze the seam and favor the option and drag combo instead. Look for a user controlled defender crashing down on the shallow drag route, since this play lacks extra protection a spy or hot blitzer on that side can disrupt the timing before the option route develops. Beware of Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined underneath zone defenders, as they can take away both the drag and option routes and force the quarterback into the low percentage deep seam or corner throw.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or shifts to confirm if the defense is playing man or zone before the snap since the slot option route is a true man beater that settles into a hook if it reads zone.

Target the option route first on third and short or third and medium because the receiver reads the defender's hips and breaks accordingly, giving you a high percentage completion against both press and off coverage.

If you see a single high safety shell, prioritize the deep corner route on the trio side since the cornerback often has to respect the vertical release and cannot leverage the corner cleanly.

Pair this play with Curl Flats or Stick in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between quick game and the option concept, since both share similar formation alignment and disguise your intentions pre-snap.

Against aggressive blitz looks, hot route the backside seam runner into a quick out or use the shallow drag as your check down since there is no dedicated blocker to pick up extra rushers.
