QB Draw out of Shotgun 5WR Trio sends five eligible receivers vertical or into their route stems to hold every defender in coverage while the offensive line sets up a delayed pass-protection look before opening running lanes for the quarterback. There are no true pass routes to progress through since this is a designed run, the linemen sell pass block for a beat then climb to the second level, and the QB delays his handoff-style drop before hitting the crease up the middle. This is purely a run play designed to punish aggressive pass rush teams and spread defenses out of their run fits with five receivers releasing.
Pre-snap, count defenders in the box and check for a nickel or dime package, since light boxes with five DBs are prime for this draw to hit big. Watch for blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge, since disciplined defenders who stay home in their run fit will erase the draw before it develops. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's first step, if he drops immediately into pass coverage the draw lane opens quickly. User-controlled defenders spying the quarterback or sitting in a lurk technique in the intermediate middle will blow this play up, so avoid calling it when the defense shows a QB spy tendency. Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, defensive ends who stay patient and read run first will close the cutback lane, so this play is more effective against man coverage teams that trust their backside pursuit less.
Call this on early downs or second-and-short when the defense expects a dropback pass from a 5WR personnel look.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has only two or three true box defenders you have a numbers advantage up front.
Use the delayed mesh point to bait aggressive edge rushers who are crashing hard off the snap, since their pursuit angles will take them away from the draw lane.
Pair this with Four Verticals or Hitch Corners from the same formation so defenses cannot sit on the draw look after seeing five receivers release vertically on previous snaps.
Avoid calling this against disciplined zone teams that keep linebackers reading run gaps, since their eyes will stay on the backfield mesh point.
