Breakdown

Whips out of Shotgun 5WR Trio is a trips-side man beater built around whip routes designed to shake off tight coverage at the top of the route stem. On the trio side, the two inside receivers run whip routes that break sharply back toward the sideline after selling a vertical stem, while the outside receiver of that trio climbs straight up the seam on a vertical route to hold the deep defenders. To the backside, the lone receiver runs a shallow drag across the field, and the offensive line executes a half slide protection with the running back releasing into the flat as an outlet. The primary read progression starts with the inside whip route since the sharp break creates immediate separation against man coverage, then works to the vertical seam if the safety bites, and finally checks down to the backside drag or flat if the whips are covered underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth on the trio side since a single high safety indicates man coverage underneath, which is exactly what the whip routes are designed to exploit. Watch the slot cornerback's leverage at the snap since inside shade or press alignment tells you he will struggle to mirror the whip's comeback break. Post-snap, key the flat defender and any underneath zone defenders sitting at the whip route's break depth, since Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined underneath drops take away the easy separation this play relies on. Watch for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone near the whip break point, since a smart human defender can jump the route if he reads the quarterback's eyes early. If the defense shows a nano blitz or overload pressure look, expect the quarterback to work to the backside drag or the running back's flat release as a quick answer against the rush.

Usage Tips

Attack man coverage first since the whip route's sharp comeback break is designed to snap off press or trail defenders at the stem.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 1 man since the whip routes lose value against zone drops that sit at the same depth as the break.

Hot route the backside drag into a deeper crosser if you see a Tampa 2 shell, since the whip concept struggles against underneath zone that squats on the break point.

Use this on second and medium or third and short since the whip breaks typically create yardage in the five to eight yard range rather than explosive plays.

Pair Whips with Whips Curls in the same set to keep the defense guessing on the exact depth of the inside breaking routes, forcing linebackers and slot corners to hesitate on their zone drops.
