Double Pivot from the Shotgun 5WR Trio set is a trips-side pass concept built around two pivot routes that break back toward the quarterback after selling vertical releases, paired with a deep corner route from the outermost trips receiver and a backside go route on a hot receiver flanked by a receiver running a hard flat route away from the concept. The line and backfield show no visible run blocking or play-action mesh, confirming this is a straight drop back passing play designed to attack zone defenders who sink too deep or man defenders who overplay the initial vertical stems. The primary read starts with the underneath pivot from the inside trips receiver, then works to the second pivot route breaking outside, and finally to the deep corner route if the pivots are covered and the pocket holds.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and count defenders in the box, since a two high shell with soft corners on the trips side signals the pivot routes will have a tighter throwing window underneath. Post-snap, user the hook or flat defender and sit on the first pivot route, since that inside break is the quarterback's first read and the most common target versus zone. Watch for a lurking linebacker sitting in the intermediate middle, as that defender can undercut the second pivot route if the quarterback double clutches the throw. Against man coverage, look for a corner blitz or nano blitz off the edge, since the quick pivot concept is designed to get the ball out fast and can be exposed by unblocked pressure if the offensive line is outnumbered. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender jumping the underneath route can take away the first pivot, forcing the quarterback to climb the progression to the deep corner route where a deep third defender is waiting.
Usage Tips
Take a pre-snap look at the trips side leverage, if the corner is sitting outside with inside help underneath, the pivot routes will have room to settle in the void.
Use the deep corner route as a hot beater against man coverage that jumps the pivots, since the pivot stems naturally create separation against man defenders trailing from behind.
This play pairs well with Curl Flats and Shallow Cross in a sequence, since all three attack the same trips-side underneath zones but from different angles, forcing the defense to guess leverage.
Best called on second and medium or third and short, where the quick-breaking pivot routes give you a high-percentage completion without needing a deep hold in the pocket.
Against zone heavy defenses, key on the flat defender and hook defender, if they widen with the flat route, throw the first pivot immediately as it breaks into that vacated zone.
