Shallow Cross out of Shotgun 5WR Trio 11 personnel isolates two crossing shallow routes underneath a deep clear-out concept. Both slot receivers run the shallow cross at the sticks, one from the left crossing right (drawn in red as the primary hot route) and the other from the right crossing left, while the backside outside receiver runs a deep corner-breaking route up the sideline and the trio-side receiver runs a deep out to hold the flat defender. The inline TE releases on a deep dig across the middle to occupy linebackers and clear space underneath for the shallow crossers. This is a man beater concept designed to exploit trailing defenders on the crossers while the vertical routes stretch zone defenders, with the primary read progressing from the underneath shallow cross to the deep dig if the crossers are covered.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment on the outside receivers since a two-high shell with off corners signals zone drops that can undercut the shallow crossers. Watch for linebackers cheating toward the middle of the field before the snap, which tips off a possible spy or a defender designated to sit underneath and jump the crossing routes. Post-snap, key on any user-controlled defender flowing toward the shallow cross immediately at the snap, since that usually means the human is manually spying the crosser and the deep dig or corner route becomes the better outlet. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets shredded by the natural pick action on the crossers, but a Tampa 2 shell or a defense with a linebacker sitting at the sticks in a shallow zone can take away the underneath crossing routes entirely. Blitz-heavy looks with man coverage behind them are especially vulnerable since the shallow cross clears out fast before pressure arrives.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man or zone by checking if defenders are aligned over the slot receivers or sitting in soft zone shells off the ball. Against man coverage, trust the shallow cross to create natural rub separation and take the first open crosser immediately after the snap. Against zone coverage look to the deep dig from the TE or the corner route on the backside, since those routes attack the seams vacated by underneath zone defenders. This play works best on third and medium to third and long since the shallow crosses need room to develop and settle into open grass. Pair this with Mesh Spot or Inverted Mesh from the same set to keep defenders guessing on similar crossing concepts, then mix in Four Verticals or Whips to punish defenses that start jumping the shallow routes.
